Mrs Tinks is a hit with my little girl

Mrs Tinks is a clever lady. We received the samples to review the week before we went on a family visit to Wales, which made life much easier for me. Trying to juggle work, housework, a hint of a social life and looking after my little 15-month old daughter, is difficult enough, without having to pack for the holiday and arrange a cat-sitter!

I usually cook 99% of Ellie’s meals from scratch, but I have tried Little Dish (lovely products) before when I knew I had a chaotic week ahead. Mrs Tinks is a new range of ready meals for one to five year olds, produced by a Mum based in London with a passion for fresh ingredients and real food for real families.

The packaging is straight forward, uncomplicated and with its brown paper-style carton pack is likely to fit into the ready meals fixture in stores without too many problems. However, it also looks homemade and artisan, which will help it to stand out against the bold colours typical of the big name brands. I’d much rather have a simple pack if it means the food is honestly handmade and tasty – and this is the message that the packaging portrays.

I tried each meal, but Ellie was, of course, the chief taste tester. She is renowned for trying anything, but not necessarily taking more than one bite. Her favourite foods are cod, corn on the cob, peas, apples and “cakies” as she calls them. I was therefore not surprised that the first Mrs Tinks specialty she tried and enjoyed was the Fish Pie. I also loved it and could happily have eaten one for myself with a side salad for my tea. There was enough salmon and cod to make it a very filling and nutritious dish. In all honesty, the portions are too big for my 15 month old and I ended up finishing each of the meals (which is dangerous when you’re trying to watch your weight!) without realizing it!

The meals are suitable for pre-schoolers so I reckon a three to four year old would happily eat it all. The food can be frozen, so there is the potential of splitting one portion into two meals, making it even more cost-effective!

Apparently Ellie is not so different to her peers. Julia Boddy, the creator of Mrs Tinks, says that Fish Pie and Chicken Curry are the two most popular lines. The others are Beef Lasagne (delicious!) and Spinach & Butternut Squash Lasagne (which Ellie wasn’t keen on but was having an off-day generally).

Mrs Tinks must be an incredibly busy lady making all of this food – I wonder whether her children now eat at least one a day? It definitely made life that bit easier during my busy week. It is now just a question of getting a national retail listing. Julia sells the range direct to the consumer (schools, playgroups etc) but the range is calling out for support from a forward-thinking retailer like Waitrose. Plus, parents are calling out for real, honestly produced food that their children will actually eat, when they simply don’t have the time or energy to cook.

I wish Mrs Tinks the best of luck with this lovely, heart-felt range of food for toddlers.
